WindowAlert Decals
WindowAlert decals come in a variety of attractive designs and are easy to apply. The decals reflect UV light, which is visible to many bird species but invisible to humans. We advise caution with these products: numerous decals are required for effective collision risk reduction, and they must be replaced every four months due to degradation of the UV reflective material.Â
Design Options
Effectiveness
Research by the American Bird Conservancy finds that WindowAlert decals are effective at reducing bird window collisions when applied across the entire surface of the window with decals spaced every one to two inches apart. Leaving larger gaps between decals reduces the effectiveness of the product. The decals must be placed on the outside surface of the window to be effective. The ultraviolet reflective material degrades over time and the decals must be replaced every four months.
Cost
WindowAlert decals range in size from 2″x 2.5″ (e.g., Aspen Leaf design) to 4.75″ x 8.75″ (e.g., Hawk design). Assuming an average decal size of 4″ x 4″, treating a 3′ x 5′ window would require at least 50 decals. This would cost about $100, and would have to be replaced every four months approximately. The manufacturer suggests larger spacing between decals and applying UV Liquid between decals. However, this mix and configuration of UV Liquid and UV decals is less effective than other products.
