Background
Why did you decide to move?
You can read more about the decision to move from our former location in Wedgwood on our Finding Our New Nest FAQ.
How did you select your new location?
Birds Connect Seattle convened a Headquarters Task Force comprised of staff, board members, and community volunteers with the consultation of lawyers and real estate experts. This group met regularly in the fall and winter of 2024 to develop criteria, evaluate specific properties, and analyze the results of community surveys and focus groups. The final property was recommended by the Task Force and approved by the Board. A lease was signed in March 2025.
What happened to your Wedgwood property?
As part of the sale of our Wedgwood property at 8050 35th Ave NE, Birds Connect Seattle placed a legal conservation easement on the trees and native plant garden. This important piece of urban habitat will be protected. You can read more about the easement on our blog.Â
The new owner, a wellness studio, plans to keep the current building and after rennovations will open at that location.
How can you afford to rent downtown?
As a nonprofit 501(c)3, Birds Connect Seattle relies on the generosity of our members to fund our programs and fuel our mission on behalf of local birds. Even as we move from property owners to tenants this remains true.
Birds Connect Seattle sold our Wedgwood property in January 2025. The proceeds of that sale are being invested to fund ongoing rent expenses.
Our new headquarters has a smaller overall footprint than our previous space and the layout is more flexible, efficient, and ADA accessible, which better supports our current operations.
While the greater Seattle area does have a high commercial real estate rental rates, downtown Seattle rents are more affordable post-COVID, and are comparable to several other neighborhoods in central and north Seattle.
What do you need from us, the BCS community?
We are looking forward to resuming operations in the near future once our new space is ready for us. We appreciate your patience during this time and encourage your continued participation as a volunteer, member, or through our program activities throughout this interim closure. Keep an eye on your email for news on our grand opening and other ways to stay in touch and advocate for birds and conservation. Â
